Cancer Genomics Lab

Cancer is complex disease with variable presentation and outcomes thus requires multidisciplinary approach for prevention, early detection and better management. The field of oncology is gradually shifting from “one size fits all” approach towards personalize medicine based on genetic variants. The role of cancer genomics is increasing steadily for prevention, early detection and better patient’s management. Furthermore, rate of inherited cancers is higher in countries with consanguineous marriages and Pakistan is no exception. The genetic architecture varies across populations and every country retains particular cancer disposition spectrum. The state of art lab is established to promote multidisciplinary cancer research at PINUM to investigate inherited cancer dispositions and to establish diagnostic services for targeted therapies. Research • Our focus is to elucidate genetic spectrum of hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC), hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) and familial medullary thyroid carcinoma (FMTC) in Pakistani population. • In addition we are interest to develop non-invasive urinary biomarkers to predict low risk/benign prostate cancer to circumvent unnecessary biopsies.
